There will be a Commons statement today at 15:30 from Alastair Darling regarding a "major operational problem" at Revenues and Customs (HMRC). Nick Robinson is speculating that it has something to do with data loss. Whatever it is about, it does not sound good.
My column over at the Wardman Wire - Politics Decoded - tackles the Darling/Northern Rock issue. This announcement will only add to calls for Darling's head.
No doubt Jack Straw will be watching this and the fallout with particular interest over the coming days...
UPDATE: Paul Gray (Chief Exec of HMRC) has resigned. This is serious. Has Gray been made the scapegoat for Darling? Surely the clock is ticking for Darling either way...
